Here's a few details about our trip in the Maya world...
From Coban, about halfway north from Guatemala City to Mexico, we made a day trip in the jungle, at el Biotopo del Quetzal. The Quetzal is the national official animal in Guatemala. It's a really beautiful bird, kinda green-blueish, with an incredibly long tail, really impressive when you can see one... unfortunatly, there isn't many ways to see a Quetzal, since the bird can't survive in captivity and it's a really shy bird in the jungle...
Anyway, we did a couple of hikes in the biotopo, very interesting, really hot too... we saw interesting animals and a great variety of insect. The biggest one being a huge coleopter that we called the hyppocoleopter... was about four inches long all black, in tow sections (an abdomen and something else? I know nothing about insects!) and with two mandubulas in front of him (her??)... other than that, lots of little cute lizards, we even saw a guy lizard cruising a pretty girl lizard and took a picture of the two! Ah, we saw our first snake in central america as well... a little one, about 18 inches long, all brownish, really why, but i manage to take a picture of him as well... soon on the net, those pics...
for that night, back in Coban, we had a couple friends in our room at the hostel... kind of big crickets, about 3 inches long, all bright green, looked like leaves, really good to melt in the forest but easy to spot in a hostel room :)))) One of the two stayed with us the whole 3 days we spent in Coban, the other one just visit... i suspect he was the boyfriend of the first one, but go figure with insects...
We are in Flores, now, a bit deeper in the Maya world... and Tikal in near... the deepest you can go in the Maya history in the jungle...
Monkeys and gorillas and crocodiles are waiting for us there... along witht he most impressive ruins to see in Guatemala (as everyone told us)...
